The meaning of " I "

I really liked this chapter because of so many things. First of all, it explains truths that we will maybe never ask ourselves and which are very interesting to know about. What I really liked the most and what it impressed me the most is the beginning of the chapter when they explain Descartes ideas about humanity. He had two theories, the first one talked about how we might be watching and listening illusions. Maybe we are just dreaming and everything that happens in our lives is just a dream. This can be true because when we dream at night we don’t even know we are dreaming. We feel like we are there. Also, in modern philosophy, this theory has evolved and now it says that we don’t need to be dreaming, we might be just some brains that have our own lives in it. The second theory of Descartes was that we might be just some experiment of a superpower. Maybe just like he said we are just an experiment and controlled by a malignant spirit which only laughs about us and don’t even care of what’s going on. These theories are funny and sometimes sound crazy but they might be correct. We don’t know anything. I really don’t believe in any of these theories but I can’t be sure about anything. Even though they exist or not, like the book said, at least I know one truth. The truth that I EXIST.

  1. Alejandro you have a good point in here. This theories are nuts, but they actually have some points. How do we know that we live our own lifes and that we are not controlled by anyone as Savater says? And although we exist how do we know for how much longer? It is not up to us, but still we do not know who is in charge of this.

  2. I agree with you Alejandro. I really thought that Descartes theories about who we are or what reality really is are very interesting. At first I thought he was kind of a mad man, but know I know that he was only asking questions to get closer and closer to what is true and not. I really don’t think he is right in his theories, but I have no way to prove them wrong, so I guess there is some sort of possibility that they may be true.

  3. Alejandro, I agree with you when you talk about breaming. When we are sleeping and dreaming, we feel like we're actually living it. Maybe Descartes is right, but I think he's not. How can he come and tell us that everything that we've been through is just an illusion? He have the liberty to think the way that we want.

  4. I also think this chapter was very interesting, and also Alejandro put me into thinking when talking about Descartes idea, because maybe we are just living in a dream full of illusions or as he said maybe we are just brains living in our own world and nobody else really exists. What worried me is when Alejandro said that maybe we are just being part of an experiment or what i sometimes think is that maybe we are in a cage that somebody invented.
