In this chapter I read an interesting quote by Immanuel Kant, “Beauty does not correspond to a concept”. This means that there are no rules for something to be determined as beautiful. I agree with this because there are many things that influence our opinion about if something is beautiful or not, and they are different for everybody, it is not following any set of rules. One thing that influences us to think that something is beautiful is the taste, that is, your personal points of view and what you like.
Even if everybody has different taste and ideas, there will be always people that agree that something is beautiful while others would argue the contrary. Savater said it is wrong to imply that something is beautiful only for you. If I understand what he means, I agree, because I think there are always people that will agree with you.
An example can be Jackson Pollock, that we saw little in class, many argue that it was not that beautiful, and it was not very difficult. Well an argument can be, as he was the first one, he caught the attention with the lines and the colors; so, it is why there are people that find it beautiful.
The book mentions that beauty can cause a kind a pleasure, a good feeling. Therefore, as beauty is subjective, the good feeling caused by it is also subjective. This good sensation caused by beauty will change from person to person, as we have all different taste and ideas.

Antony, I agree with you in the fact that I believe also that beauty does not correspond to a concept. Everyone likes different things, everyone is different in some aspect and this is why beauty has no established definition. Also as time passes, the concept of beauty changes. Different tendencies appear and what we before consider as beautiful, maybe years later is not considered as beautiful. Everything depends on whether you like something or not. I think that what really matters is what you think is beautiful, and depending of what you like, you could make a decision whether you like something or not.
ResponderEliminarAnthony I agree with your post in all senses, I also think there are people who will always agree with you, taking into count that we live in a populated world. I also agree that the feeling caused by what is beautiful is subjective and thats why it can't be beautiful for everyone because then everyone would have to feel the same feeling.
ResponderEliminarHi Anthony, I also agree with Kant because we are all different and therefore we have different perspectives of what beauty is.
ResponderEliminarI think that it is really lame to think a person is right or wrong we he/she judges something as beautiful because this judment is subjective.
The example of Pollock's paintings was a great way to show how the perspective can be different depending on each person.
Anthony I liked how you talked about beauty not corresponding to a concept, since I too believe this. Beauty is something spontaneous that awakes a good feeling like you said before, therefore it can't correspond to a certain concept.
ResponderEliminarAs for your example, Jason Pollock was as you mention, a misunderstood artist. However the important thing I believe people must remember is that for him what he painted was beauty and beauty is something personal; as Savater says, what is beautiful for someone can not be beautiful to someone else. So I believe Jason Pollock was just expressing his idea of beautiful and it should be respected.
Tienes razón al decir qu la belleza es algo subjetivo pues todos podemos tener diferentes definiciones para ella, y es cierto aunque todos veamos la belleza de diferentes perspectivas siempre va a ver alguien que concuerde contigo.
ResponderEliminarAs everything in life Anthony, some people might agree with you and some will always go against you, this is what makes us human, and what you said by Jackson Pollock, I personally think his paintings are a little weird, but some say they are beautiful. This is what makes the world what it is.
